Has your exercise routine slipped over the summer? Here's how to get back into the gym without putting yourself under unnecessary pressure.

The summer holidays can make it difficult to maintain your normal exercise routine.
The children are at home, holidays interrupt the week and social plans take priority.
Even if you don't have children, summer can change your usual routine.
Before you know it, September is approaching and it feels like you need to start all over again.
If that sounds familiar, don't worry.
You haven't failed and you haven't lost all your previous progress.
You just need to start rebuilding your routine.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when returning to the gym is doing too much too soon.
You don't need to punish yourself for enjoying the summer.
Your first few sessions should be about regaining confidence and getting used to exercising again.
That might mean using lighter weights, taking longer breaks or adapting parts of the workout.
The most important thing is simply getting back through the door.
It can be tempting to promise yourself that you'll exercise every day once September arrives.
But an ambitious plan can quickly become another source of pressure.
Start by looking at your actual week.
When could you realistically exercise without needing everything to go perfectly?
At Benchmark, we normally encourage members to aim for three coached sessions each week.
If that currently feels like too much, start by booking your first session.
One completed workout is more valuable than another week spent waiting for the perfect time.
A lot of people wait until they feel completely ready before getting started.
The problem is that motivation often appears after you take action.
You just need to take one manageable step.
Once you complete your first few sessions, exercise will begin to feel like a normal part of your week again.
Returning to a gym can feel daunting when you don't know what exercises to do or how hard to push yourself.
At Benchmark, every Group Personal Training session is led by a coach.
We show you what to do, help with your technique and adapt exercises around your current fitness, confidence or injuries.
You won't be expected to keep up with anyone else.
You also won't be left to work everything out alone.
Our members include complete beginners and people returning after months or even years away from exercise.
Everyone starts from a different place.
September naturally feels like an opportunity to reset.
The school routine returns, summer plans settle down and the week becomes more predictable.
But you don't need to wait until 1 September to begin.
Your first goal doesn't need to be a huge transformation.
It could simply be to move more, improve your energy and start spending some regular time looking after yourself.
